Odacité Kind of Girl: Lauren Roxburgh

Lauren Roxburgh, body alignment, fascia + movement specialist, & author of Taller, Slimmer, Younger - 21 Days to a Foam Roller Physique

Fascia, alignment, movement, and foam rolling expert Lauren Roxburgh is a dear friend and one of the best trainers and healers I know.

Besides her extraordinary expertise, what I love about Lauren is her amazing capacity to balance being a fabulous Mom and successful entrepreneur.

She is the author of the best-selling book ‘Taller, Slimmer, Younger -21 Days to a Foam Roller Physique’ and also is the creator of the Lo Rox Aligned Rollers. It is the healing combo that will help you elongate your muscles, tone the body, and provide a regenerative massage.

We interviewed Lauren so she can educate us about the importance of the fascia, the benefits of foam rolling, and show us some moves to do at home to relieve stress.

Tell Odacité beauty lovers a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to begin your amazing wellness journey with a special focus on body alignment.

My wellness journey began at a young age, I was an All American swimmer and a collegiate water polo player and despite being incredibly fit by some measures, I was eating a diet that didn’t work for me, my body was in pain, bulky, compressed and inflexible and not only was my body out of balance, but so was my spirit and ultimately my life. This experience was exacerbated when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I was nudged to start doing the work of looking within.  I knew there had to be a better way to find true health, happiness and a balanced body.  Not the sort of health that is dictated by an arbitrary number on a scale, but the kind of health where , you feel amazing inside and out and your body is glowing and functioning at it’s peak and is pain free, balanced, graceful, flexible and able to take on whatever you choose to do physically, emotionally and mentally.  More importantly, the sort of health where you are happy, grounded, productive and able to ride the waves of life, learn and grow while withstanding the stresses of our increasingly busy modern lives.

Needless to say, I’ve had a lifelong interest in wellness and holistic fitness which led me to study many different techniques – nutrition, physiology, Classical Pilates, yoga, and Structural Integration which is focused on fascia and getting the body into correct alignment in all aspects.  Based on my research, education and knowledge simply put, I’ve created a holistic formula that blends aspects of all of these to not just get you in shape but to transform and attune your entire body, mind, spirit and ultimately your life.

Everyone here at Odacité HQ are huge fans of your best selling book, Taller, Slimmer, Younger, a 21-day exercise program for elongating muscles and hydrating fascia using only a foam roller. Can you explain to our readers what fascia is and why it matters.

That is so exciting! Thank you for the love! Fascia is now being called our sensory organ and it’s actually responsible for the shape of our bodies! Basically, fascia is like a very thin wetsuit just under the skin that wraps around each individual muscle and keeps everything in place (including our organs). The sketch below illustrates how fascia encases muscle.

This is an image of what fascia looks like in the body. The top layer is the skin, the next layer (web-like, spongy tissue) is the fascia, and the deepest layer is the muscle. When fascia becomes tight, thick, dense, and plasticized (like a dried up sponge) movement becomes restricted and the alignment and efficiency of the body can be compromised.

By nature, fascia is malleable (although, in an unhealthy state, it becomes rigid and knotted, brittle and dried up). For better or for worse, it changes form based on our actions and movements. If we repeat a certain motion over and over again, our fascia will begin to adjust its shape in a way that reflects that movement. Because the fascia is an interconnected web of tissue that covers the entire body, when one area of the body is misshapen (or out of alignment), it naturally affects other connected areas of the body, throwing them out of alignment, too. Healthy fascia is thin, smooth, and resilient, like Saran Wrap or a sponge with added water; unhealthy fascia holds toxins and scar tissue. What does this have to do with my program? Everything! With all of this in mind, it follows that fascia is integral in our efforts to achieve both long, lean and strong muscles and proper alignment. It’s no coincidence that these are two of the most critical components in creating a taller, slimmer, younger and healthier physique.

A lot of us are guilty for spending 8+hours sitting everyday, whether it is at the office, in the car, or at home. Is there a foam roller movement you can share that will help relieve the health effects (back pain, poor alignment, catabolism) from sitting for too long?

You have your very own LoRox Aligned Roller. What differentiates it from some the other foam rollers on the market?

My LoRox Aligned Roller is designed to elongate muscles, tone the body and provide a regenerative massage. I developed the roller from a moderate density durable EVA foam that is perfect for improving blood circulation and hydrate your fascia, tone your muscles and lubricate your joints. The roller’s most unique features are its softer density and raised, circular bumps aid that in lymphatic drainage and decreasing inflammation.

Last but not least, could you tell our readers what your all-time favorite Odacité product is and how you use it in your skincare regime :-)

Obsessed with the Ac+R Youthful Glow and Ba+S Eye Contour Serum Concentrates!
