Chances are either your phone, computer or tablet is within arm’s reach right now - if you aren’t already using it to read this post ;)
We are spending more time than ever on digital devices and depending on what study you read, it can be anywhere between two to four hours daily just on our cell phones! From snaps and selfies to sitting in front of a computer all day and scrolling through our feeds at night, it is rare for us to not be looking at a screen for more than just a moment.
If you are one of the many who reach for your phone the second you wake up, feel anxious about the number of notifications you get a day or feel like everyone you follow on social media is living a better life than you, you may want to consider going on a digital detox to reset and give your face and neck muscles a rest from staring at a screen all the time.
Why Detox?
Detoxes of all kinds are typically beneficial to help cleanse your system, reboot your energy and practice self-love and care. A huge benefit of a “digital detox” is to improve relationships with not just others but with yourself. Temporarily disengaging from emails, social media and texting, whether you are alone or in a social setting, will give you time to tune into what really matters and can lead to greater productivity and stretches of true happiness.
Another huge benefit of temporarily going digital free is avoiding technology pollution (which is proving to cause premature ageing) and letting your spine rest from the poor posture of looking down at your phone.
If you are ready to detox, keep reading below for our Digital Detox How-To Guide!
Step 1: Choose a time frame of when you want the detox to take place. Choose wisely as this will mean no computers, smartphones, laptops, tablets or any other digital devices you own. A minimum of 24-hours is recommended.
Step 2: Have a list ready of things you have always wanted to do but haven’t found the time for such as reading, cooking a new recipe, cleaning out your closet or visiting family & friends.
Step 3: Keep a journal. Notice the emotions you feel during the detox and write them down.
Step 4: Right before the end of your detox, set three intentions for yourself moving forward on how you want to engage with technology.
Tips:
+ If going off the grid feels scary, start off slow. Try not going on Instagram for a few days, then slowly move on to other apps.+ You can also try the “Do Not Disturb” feature on your phone from the end of the day to the time you leave for work in the morning.
If you try the detox, be sure to share your experience in the comments below. Can’t wait to hear the incredible benefits you feel!
